Interlake junior goalie Sam Dawson saved the day, making two clutch blocks in a game that ultimately came down to a keeper’s nightmare — penalty kicks.
With both teams scoreless after regulation and two five-minute overtime periods, the game was on Dawson’s shoulders.
Following three successful goals by both teams, a save by Dawson on the fourth penalty kick and a goal by sophomore Owen Gortner, Dawson took to the goal line with the game in the balance. He dove to the right and punched the ball away to win it. His team praised him with shouts of “Sam! I love you!”
“I just went in and tried to be the biggest I could, tried to read their players,” Dawson said. “I got lucky and we were able to finish all of our chances, which was awesome.”
Lakeside fell to 13-8-1.
“As Coach (Mark) Szabo always says, ‘that’s soccer for you,’ ” said Lakeside senior Andrew Parks.
